WFCA History

WFCA Historical Glimpse: The Western Fire Chiefs Association (WFCA) was formed in 1891 by a group of fire chiefs who were concerned about how to keep pace with the increasing demands on their limited resources. They established an annual forum to exchange ideas and concerns regarding fire prevention and fire suppression issues. These fire service pioneers believed that a collective approach to problem solving would be more productive than their individual efforts.

Their corporate efforts started the fire prevention codes and ordinances, standards for fire suppression equipment, fire fighting procedures, and the training processes we currently enjoy. The seeds of change planted by these forward-thinking fire service leaders over 106 years ago are the roots of the WFCA we know today.

Throughout its rich and successful history, the WFCA has remained focused on the vision of its founders and the commitment to integrity, loyalty, and service.

WFCA is committed to:

  • Building and maintaining relationships with its members, its state associations, the IAFC, and other partner organizations.
  • Supporting, endorsing, and fostering legislative and policy development initiatives that will enhance the fire service and advance firefighter, citizen, and community safety.
  • Endorsing programs that foster and promote quality improvement and professional development for fire service professionals and agencies.
  • Seeking and utilizing fire service leaders who will professionally and enthusiastically advance the mission, goals and objectives of the organization.
  • Remaining focused on enhancing the financial strength of the association.
