Deric Weiss has been the fire chief of Tualatin Valley Fire & Rescue since July 1, 2019. He leads Oregon’s largest fire district that serves more than 530,000 people with a workforce of 650 personnel. TVF&R has only had four chiefs since the District’s formation in 1989.

Chief Weiss volunteered and served as an intern before being hired by TVF&R as a firefighter in 1994. Since then, Chief Weiss has held multiple ranks at TVF&R, including lieutenant, captain, battalion chief, division chief, and the assistant chief overseeing all of TVF&R’s emergency operations, which includes 28 fire stations and three specialty teams (water rescue, hazardous materials, and technical rescue).

Chief Weiss has a Bachelor of Science degree in fire service administration. He also holds numerous certifications in emergency operations and is an Oregon‐certified emergency medical technician. He has been involved in many local and statewide fire service initiatives including emergency communications, dispatch, hazardous materials response, intergovernmental affairs and interoperability. Chief Weiss has served as a member of the Board of Directors for the Oregon Fire Chief’s Association.

In addition to assuring the best service possible for his communities, Chief Weiss is keenly focused on evolving his organization’s culture to be as inclusive as possible. He wants his ranks to better reflect the people being served by TVF&R. Most recently, he overhauled TVF&R’s intern program and established an entry‐level, single role paramedic position that has proven a pathway to becoming a firefighter.

During his free time, Chief Weiss spends time with his wife and two daughters. He is an avid runner and golfer.
