Current and emerging AI technology has greatly improved our ability to model and predict wildfire risk, behavior, and spread. This provides a significant advantage to fire and emergency personnel who are responsible for making quick, effective decisions in response to active and potential wildfires. This article explores the ways in which AI can currently be used in these areas, as well as emerging research and development in the field of AI wildfire modeling.
Wildfire modeling can be used to model both wildfire and prescribed fire behavior. AI frameworks and models, though less likely to produce errors than traditional wildfire models, are not going to be 100% accurate, 100% of the time. Human involvement is still an essential component of wildfire mitigation, planning, and response.
