The National Fire Prevention Association (NFPA) offers the Firewise® USA program, designed to empower neighbors to collaborate in mitigating wildfire risks in their communities and establishing a Firewise® Community. Members of these communities will be connected with fire officials and learn the value in creating defensible space and how it can be done to their home.¹

Public Service Announcements (PSA)

Get involved with local media outlets to create PSAs that will inform a community about the consequences of wildfires and how to prevent them from happening in the first place.  PSAs can include fire prevention tips, interesting facts about wildfires, or how to recognize a potential fire hazard.

Leveraging social media platforms, such as X (formerly known as Twitter), Facebook, and Instagram, is a low-cost and highly effective way to reach a large audience and share information about wildfires. Utilize trending topics or memes to gain attraction to your post and encourage your followers to share or repost! Wildfire Awareness Month is the perfect time to form a social media campaign on the topic.

Community Involvement

In addition to creating a Firewise® Community, communities can create a designated “clean-up day” to help one another clear fire hazardous material from around their homes. Fire departments are encouraged to attend local fairs or events to help spread the message on how the public can help prevent wildfires. Local businesses can also help the cause by offering incentives for being prepared for wildfires.

Why is Wildfire Awareness Important?

Raising awareness will help individuals gain knowledge about the causes and origins of wildfires, methods of prevention, and the necessary in fire-prone regions. This will empower individuals to make smart choices and take action to reduce the risks of wildfires. It also encourages responsible behavior, like properly putting out campfires and reporting potential fire dangers.
