NextGen Bulletproof Firefighter Helmets

A recent article published in the Daily Dispatch highlights the latest advancements in firefighter helmets, showcasing next-generation designs that offer protection not only against fires but also against bullets. These helmets also promise to reduce the risk of blunt head trauma and improve mobility and postural stability. On Fire Headlines, host Samantha Didion is joined by the panel, consisting of Chief Bob Horton and Chief Jeff Buchanan. Together, they discuss the challenges that need to be addressed for the adoption of advanced helmets, while also exploring the potential benefits these helmets could offer.

Traditional Helmets in U.S. Fire Service

Chief Buchanan begins this week’s discussion by outlining concerns related to the current helmets utilized in the U.S., fire service. He emphasizes the need to enhance helmets for improved functionality and safety. He reveals a startling fact that current helmets pose a risk of decapitation if worn inside a fire engine. Chief Horton echoes Chief Buchanan’s concerns, and together they advocate for adopting NextGen helmets to improve functionality and safety.

Too Dedicated to Tradition?

Both panel members acknowledge the trial runs that have been conducted at various fire departments throughout the U.S. involving advanced helmets. Although these new helmets proved to increase proficiency within the departments, external scrutiny from others in the fire service led to the decision of these departments not to adopt them. In response to such challenges, Chief Horton suggests aligning incentives and grants to encourage a smoother transition to advanced helmets.
